Valentine's Day!

This month has been crazy with snow days and inconsistent schedules for everyone.   Friday the 13th and Valentine's Day falling simultaneously might put fear in the heart of many a teacher!  There was no fear in my heart.   I had already decided to embrace the energy and enjoy the day through the eyes of my second graders!      Plans included more valentine card writing,  conversation heart math with Mrs. Chase, using our comprehension strategies to understand the lesson of a story presented on the smartboard,  reading to self, distributing valentine cards and finally opening and reading valentine cards together.   As children entered the class the excitement in the air was palpable.   There was much fun and learning wrapped up into our busy day!  I am thrilled that all my students managed to pass out their cards,  enjoy opening them and pack them away carefully into backpacks to bring home.  In addition they learned about showing appreciation and kindness to others, making estimates and predictions in math, collecting and totaling data, adding double digit numbers using place value,  maintaining reading stamina through the excitement of a holiday and accepting kindness in the form of valentine cards from others.  What a great day!

Wishing all the families of room 24 a happy Valentine's Day and a warm and safe February vacation.

PJ Party

We ended up the week before vacation with our PJ Party.  Children were invited to wear holiday pjs and bring in their favorite holiday story to share with a reading partner.  Everyone was so excited to share their stories and participate in a fun filled day before heading out for a two week break.

Artistic Inspiration

We were so inspired by Bren Bataclan and his work that we created a bulletin board outside our classroom with art created in Bren's style.  Don't you think it feels happy?

The week before vacation Bren Bataclan joined us at NMES to create a mural for us all to enjoy.  He used ideas generated by the entire school to create a harbor inspired mural.  Our fifth graders created sketches of the scenes Bren painted.  It was so much fun to see him in our halls each day.  The children really enjoyed watching the project evolve.

When Bren was working on finalizing the mural two of my students led tours to the mural.  They then took photos of the groups near the mural.  They were very proud to be entrusted with this job.  They took it very seriously.
